There really is a beauty to it all. Nature comes to a halt. It is thirsty and tired, waiting for some moisture to relieve the longing for rain. I love to sit under the crape myrtles this time of year. It is hot and the myrtles weep. There is a satisfaction in the fact that a tree can share it's moisture with me; cooling those sitting under the shade of their thirsty branches. "Oh, for me? Thank you." I am taking notice. I will take my coffee under the tree, accept my hot summer "pill" and take what the crape myrtle has to offer. I follow all the outdoor animals and find my way to the cool spots. The cats naturally know where to go.
August and February are alike to me. They are the true months of dormancy. Polar opposites. They make us hope for change and want to move forward. The sky is similar too. It is sooo blue. Clear and unrelenting, without a cloud of relief and glaring upon our backs, chasing us back inside to seek shelter. One too hot, one too cold....
We don't look at August as an important month, but it does give us something...a common ground to speak of....and it gives September a very good name. Just typing September makes me feel slightly cooler.
So, we may not like August much these days, but it is the corridor to new beginnings. A very long corridor this year. None the less, we all endure it with grumblings of needing change. Even the neighborhood dogs have let up on "the mailman is coming" barking alerts. We are all waiting together in our summer hibernation time.....waiting.
I know, in just one more week, I will be walking my dogs around 6:30 a.m. and hear the marching band at our local high school. They too are representative of cool coming our way. Football season will soon be upon us. The football stadium will be filling up on Friday nights and I will walk outside and hear the faint roar of the crowd in the distance. Listen carefully, the crowd goes wild. Oh August, you are a tease. I appreciate the job you have to do for your calendar. I may not like you very much, but I appreciate the buzz you create. You happen to be one of the most talked about months of the year that doesn't have a major holiday attached to it.
I commend you for taking the "heat". I would take my hat off to you but it is just too darn hot to do that.
