Cookbooks are the worlds' guide to culinary happiness. They are the tool that is used to create food that is loved, new to us or simply used as a suggestion to improve on an old standard. It takes us to new places and helps us stay grounded in familiar ones.
The "idea" of a cookbook has changed. It is used as a design statement. There are beautifully bound and vintage cookbooks that are popular to have in a collection. We must also mention the chefs, bakers & cooks on TV & the internet have them. Our favorite restaurants & bakeries have their own cookbooks too. Brands of baking or cooking goods/appliances provide us with cookbooks. There are magazines dedicated to certain types of cooking. Newspapers still have food sections to give us recipes. Not to mention the "hacked" recipes that allow us to make our favorite foods from products with well guarded recipes.
Personally, I love using old cookbooks. The idea of a family member who cast their eyes on the same pages I am using, is heartwarming. It's a familiar and comforting form of expression. Back in the day, cookbooks often had a stash of handwritten recipes. Local newspaper clippings from food sections were tested and shared. The best recipes were revered and gossiped about. Cooking & baking was a job in itself.
Today, it is a changed world. Families are different and need to run more efficiently. Recipes are available on tablets and smart phones while listening to music! There are so many sites to find the best and newest recipes, it is a deep pot of cooking ideas out there!
My daughters are my recipe swappers and taste testers. Cooking, baking and eating is the perfect common ground for family. It's great to learn from your kids! It's great to give them the recipes from their past.
The newest and coolest product out there is the Perfect Bake. An App that connects your smart phone or tablet with a scale to provide you with perfect measuring. Through measurement of your main ingredient, it tells you through weight, how much of each ingredient you need to make the perfect adjustments to make a recipe work for you. You no longer have to adjust your measurements to increase or decrease recipe sizes. It has its own cookbook & adding beloved recipes is a unique feature. It's unbelievable!
