Part of my reminiscing with the catalogue reminded me that it was the first credit card my husband & I got when we were newlyweds. We still have our first purchases; knives and cutting board. The long history truly goes back to my childhood. We would shop for school clothes & shoes - we even had some professional photos "done" there.
When we moved to Collin County in 1981, we shopped JCP at Westgate Shopping Center where they had the "latest" goods and catalogue pick up. It's original store-front was, of course, on McKinney's historic square. I was told by a former JCP employee (lives in Lorena, TX), that years ago when the store was on the historic square, everyone who worked for JCP wanted to work at the McKinney store. Sales ratings were based on the store square footage and the McKinney store was huge. This JCP retiree said he remains friends with his former coworkers and knows that McKinney retirees still meet once a month for lunch. They were proud to work there and were like a family. Malls eventually changed the life of most big retailers, leaving behind the old bones for new retailers; McKinney's historic location is home to Gray Living & Westgate location is Tuesday Morning. Penney's has had their ups & downs and relocations through the years but Forbes magazine has called them the retailer to watch in 2012.
Needless to say, I am curious and have to go back and check out the store (at the mall!). It is important to keep our minds open and retry things you haven't thought about in a while or given up. Well, JCP - you are back, and so am I! And to think; I almost have that darned thing nearly paid off!
